Close that holiday door!

The holidays are upon us and if you have spent any time in the grocery store you will see the mountains of candy in the isles, end caps, and by the register. Here is the deal… when you put that candy in your cart and take it home you or someone you know is guaranteed to eat it. Stop the cycle before it happens… and here is why:

Think of your immune system as your defense shield to protect against foreign invaders and keep your body healthy. When you eat sugar you are compromising that protection because;

  • Glucose competes for vitamin C (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4425162/)

Sugar intake decreases Vitamin C. Neutrophils are white blood cells that contain high concentrations of Vitamin C. Studies show that the higher the level of Vitamin C in the neutrophil the more effective they are at fighting infection. The greater the intake of sugar, therefore, decreases the neutrophils’ ability to function. We simply cannot take Vitamin C and think that will be enough because the damage is still going on with our choice to consume sugar.

  • White blood cells are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders.

Neutrophils, the first line of defense, make up 70% of the total while blood cell count which is our shield. Studies were done that showed consuming levels of 75-100g of sugar daily results in a 50% reduction in neutrophil function!

  • Americans have proven that consumption of 175g of sugar every day chronically suppresses the immune system!

When we are not feeling well, such as when we have a cold, we still consume sugar and it continues to deplete our bodies defense system.

The #1 killer of the immune system is not disease it is sugar—found in foods like—

  • Sports drinks & electrolyte drinks, ketchup, BBQ sauce, spaghetti sauce, low-fat yogurt, ice-cream, fruit juices & juice packs, candy, pie, salad dressings, chocolate milk, pudding, low-fat milk, breads, cereal, and soda to name a few.

Think about how much candy and food we eat over the holidays! We don’t even notice that we are depleting our defenses with the foods we are eating. All that Halloween candy (and it’s given to kids), fair food, juice packs, lattes with flavor (pumpkin spice) & creamers, pies and cookies, whipped cream, and so many more.

Here are a few ways how we can boost and increase our defenses —

  • Avoid chemical dyes = chemicals stress cells

  • Increase fresh greens & fiber = cleansing foods for cells

  • Eat regular whole food meals with healthy fats = build strong cells

  • Avoid sugar = stop the damage

  • Rest = chance to restore damaged cells

  • Hydrate with water = soft & fluid healthy cells

  • Regular movement & exercise = “garbage dumping” of damaged cells via lymph

So invite people over and open your doors to community. Prepare meals with whole foods, keeping the defense shield up by making health promoting choices AND put up that shield against immune killers. Your body will thank you and so will your defense system!
